Jesuit Myanmar Mission came into existence in September 1997 with the establishment of St. Aloysius Gonzaga English Learning Institute with 150 students. The Jesuit novitiate was started on 1st of June 1999. Currently Fr Mark Raper is the Mission Superior from December 2010. Jesuit presence in Myanmar began in the 17th century of Portuguese Jesuits in the Kingdom of Arakan. Jesuits were again present in Rangoon from 1958 until their expulsion by the Burma Socialist Government of General Ne Win in 1966.
